the roland juno 60 is a programmable 6-voice polyphonic hybrid synthesizer with mostly analogue circuitry. as a synthesizer, the juno 60 is not that flexible, but it's overall sound is quite good. each voice features one digital oscillator (sawtooth, pulse with flexible pulsewidth modulation, noise, square suboctave), one resonant 24db lowpass filter, one non-resonant highpass filter, one vca (controlled by adsr or 'gate'), a single adsr envelope (can be inverted to mod filter) and one sinewave lfo. also included is an arpeggiator and a fat sounding analogue stereo chorus unit with two switchable settings. the memory section offers room for 56 sounds to save. like some other roland synths of the same era, the juno 60 uses roland-specific dcb interfacing instead of midi. therefore it is necessary to use an external midi/dcb interface, f.e. roland md-8 or kenton pro-4. the juno 60 is a very simple synth, and much like a sh101, it is therefore very straightforward and rewarding to use. its sparse features are well designed, especially the lowpass filter being a highlight, so the synth produces good basslines and the chorus unit makes huge string sounds, even from a single dco waveform. there is also a hidden unison mode, which can be accessed by holding down the transpose and arpeggio buttons while powering up - the unit then goes into a sort of 'test mode', where the arpeggio range switch selects between different voice configurations - useful for some very heavy monophonic sounds. |
